At St John's, we follow the National Curriculum for Mathematics. We use planning from the 'Abacus' scheme of work (online resource) to create fun, interactive lessons which cater to the needs of every child. Within the teaching of Maths, we aim to ensure that the children at St Johns:
Mathematics is essential for everyday life and understanding of our world. It enables the development of pupils’ natural ability to think logically and solve puzzles and real-life problems. Pupils learn to think creatively and make links between mathematical concepts through exploring patterns in the number system, shape, measures and statistics. They make and discuss propositions, explaining their reasoning and justifying their answers. They develop the skills, knowledge and efficient methods of calculation necessary to support their economic future and problem solving in life.
Here at St John’s, we aim to foster the individual’s interest, enjoyment and confidence in Maths by encouraging a positive attitude and an enquiring mind. Through our teaching, we promote the acquisition of skills, appropriate language and the ability to apply knowledge in everyday situations. At St John’s, we teach our children how to make sense of the world around them by developing their ability to calculate, reason and solve problems. We want our children to recognise and understand relationships and patterns in numbers in the world around them. We expect Mathematics to be utilised as a tool beyond the daily Mathematics lessons and beyond the classroom.
At St John's we place a huge emphasis on Mental Maths (mental arithmetic). Arithmetic is at the heart of Maths. KS2 start every Maths lesson with five Fluent in Five questions. These questions focus on maths fluency through arithmetic questions. We use Times Tables Rock Stars (TTRS), which is a fun, interactive online resource and a carefully sequenced programme of daily times tables practice. Each week concentrates on a different times table or multiple times tables. Using TTRS will successfully boost times tables recall speed and understanding.
Every year at St John's, we hold a Maths themed week. During this week, Maths is weaved into every element in the curriculum. It is a fun, jam-packed week which the children really enjoy!
